Beyond a doubt, we must know and remember that true friends can and will improve our lives. A friend is usually someone you are not related to by either birth, marriage or from any legal ties that bind you. Normally, a friend may be a casual, close, best, realist, nurturer, motivator or role model friend. But some friends will be more than just a close or role model friend, for example, and may even be a nurturing and best friend as well. Whatever kind or category of friend someone has, if the person is a true friend, then there are some distinctive good reasons why real friends are important.

Real friends can be a source of self-esteem, affection, and good times. In times of despair, for example, true friends will offer hope. The right friends can help someone feel worthwhile. Real friends are even known to significantly assist a friend get elected a class or student president, and even the President of a country. Some of us will remember that school, work, parenting, and senior citizen life are better and more fun when shared with friends. But for the friendship to be real, some factors are necessary and must be present in true friendship. Some of the factors are honesty, faithfulness, similar religion and culture, loyalty, being a good listener, love, having ideas in common, and to a lesser extent, age and intelligence. Now these are all characteristics that can be acquired and practiced in a very sincere manner to enhance a current friendship-relation and also to gain additional friends.

But there are other reasons why real friends are essential. Friends are important to even happy people or married couples. Friendship affirms and validates in a more distinctive way than even the positive romantic or blood tie. We must be very aware that real friendship is vital throughout life. But you can quickly discover real and good friends when you are down or when you require their assistance the most. Why? Because a real friend will not desert you when you are down, and will not turn against you in jealousy, for example, when you succeed.

True friends are needed in some cases, for example, for shared income and living arrangements. But we need to cultivate real friendships based on likes and dislikes, and not just on proximity and convenience. We also need to learn and teach our younger relatives, friends and neighbors, how to keep a friendship going even if a friend moves away, or if disagreements arise. Few will disagree that children with friends do better in school or that those with friends are more likely to survive a heart attack or major surgery, and may even be less likely to get respiratory infections or cancer.

For children, true friends offer opportunities for intimate peer interactions that may be unavailable at home, especially if a person is the only child of a couple. In the United States and other countries, as working mothers of school aged children increase, real friendship will offer such children an alternative intimate relationship at school and/or after school play, different from the parent-child maternal relationship. Even married adults (especially women) may confess that they cannot function well in their daily lives without their childhood and new true friends. For our elderly, friendship offers opportunities for close relationships. Friendship may mean feeling wanted and useful in their older years instead of alone and isolated.

Real friendship even offers intimacy to singles. Why? Because for the unattached or unmarried, divorced, or widowed singles, true friendship will impact on a person mental health until he/she start their own family, or if a person decides to remain or even become single for much or all of their adult years of life. Some marriages are enhanced and are the beneficiary of the emotional and intellectual stimulation of friendship, as someone may need to understand and relate to others outside the one dimensional role of parent or spouse in a marriage. And we must not forget that true friends often provide each other with some of the career continuity once offered by lifetime employers. Here friends will offer continuity to a career or the special advice needed on available job attainment.

To gain and keep real friends, the factors mentioned above are important. But others include learning sympathetic and empathetic ways to bring friends together; the art of self-disclosure and what to reveal, when and to whom; how to be for others the kind of friend that you want others to be for you; how to increase the likelihood of befriending those who share your values; better predicting of long-lasting friendship than just doing things together or being nearby; and others. Therefore, real friendship is very essential to everyone of us in our daily lives. Adults and children alike need true friends – new and long-time friends. The important factors that make people become friends and how to keep a good friendship going are necessary, can be learned and practiced. We all need at least one real good friend, but to have many is even better and more desirable.

In the current spirit of Thanksgiving and the coming Christmas Holidays, many of us may be thinking about our personal and family happiness, and good health. As such, why is happiness so important for good health? The professional and personal advice and opinions will differ, but most of us will agree that to be happy in life will enhance our well being, from personal experience. But there are some other interesting information for us to know about.

Some have said happiness is simple what you feel when what you want to happen eventually occurs. Or, it may involve a series of events that ultimately lead to a final result that makes us emotionally happy and contented. Unfortunately, throughout history and from all Continents of the World, many powerful rulers, wealthy persons, gifted university academics, talented artists, geniuses and the average person have all searched all the days of their lives and still never really achieved the happiness they desired. Some may have received short periods of contentment with some happiness, but not the real daily substantial happiness they personally needed in their lives. Some see this problem as troublesome when we want something or the other every moment of our lives. Our desire then become a problem which contribute to our unhappiness. Hence, we must explore the possibility of a life of no desires or at least minimum desires. Realistically, this may mean adjusting our life desires in line with our abilities and our real world provisions. In our daily lives, we may have observed and have been informed that some people do take some essential and necessary things for granted in their lives. In the developed world, for example, it is said that some people take shelter, breakfast, lunch, dinner, clothing, cars, televisions, computers, vacations, freedom of speech, and thousands of other conveniences for granted. This can lead to their unhappiness as they demonstrate irritations and grumble often about simple delays or errors in their daily lives from interactions with some of those conveniences. While, there are millions of other people in countries around the world who are still waiting to receive access to many of the above example conveniences.

A scientific report stated that the countries (that is, people) that are happiest are those that are healthy, wealthy, and wise. But factors such as level of poverty and access to basic education do matter. Social cohesion and a stronger sense of national identity from small population have helped to produce better happiness. But of course, money matters. So countries like Denmark and Switzerland, for example, unlike most African countries that have not much wealth, are considered to have happier people. But in many countries, unfair economic free-market systems can be blamed for producing unhappiness due to insecurity and competition. So the frustration of the 21st century modern life and world system can play an adverse role in the endeavor to become a happy individual or nation.

Nevertheless, we need to know that happiness involves gratitude, appropriate forgiveness, optimism, hope, integrity, benevolence, and the ability to foster good harmonious relationships. These will benefit not only ourselves, but also the other people around us who come in contact with us on a daily basis. On the other side, there are behaviors that decrease happiness. These include, envy, some gossip, holding a grudge, sitting around doing nothing for a very long period of time when the opposite would help our happiness, pessimism, ingratitude, irresponsibility, lack of empathy, contempt and violence, among many others. And of course, these have undesirable effects upon other people as well. We need to know and be reminded that happy people do have younger hearts, arteries, and other vital human organs. When we are happy, we will more likely recover quickly from surgery, cope better with pain, have lower blood pressure, and have longer life expectancy than unfortunate unhappy people. Those who do regular check-up and exercise more are often happier people. And we are told that happy people may have stronger immune systems, and as such are less likely to get colds and flu viruses. And of importance, we are reminded that depression is a mix of high negative emotions (such as sadness) and low positive emotions (like happiness).

Some would like us to know that, for those of us who are more concerned with creating a better world than a happier world, becoming much happier and helping others become happier may very well prove to be more effective means to this end. Happiness is not only essential to our personal and social lives, it is important to our global community. This is considered to be true because we are being told that unhappiness can breed wars and terrorism. Base on the above therefore, we are aware that happiness is really very important for our good health. Happiness will depend on the individual perspectives and actions in life, as well as the characteristics of the country in which they live. Happiness is not elusive, but takes consistent effort, honesty, sacrifice and other personal adjustments in life for it to be achieved in the interest of our good health.
